You’ve chosen the venue and now it’s time to book your entertainment. Booking your entertainment is a big decision and great care should be taken when making a choice. The best way of finding good entertainment is by personal recommendation, ask your friends and relatives and then use these recommendations to provide you with a short list. Once you’ve got your list, make an appointment to meet each one and discuss the type of party you are hoping for.

Ask practical questions like:

Who would be there for you should they be unable to perform? (Even Entertainers get sick, have transport breakdowns or have accidents!)

How long do they need for setting up?

Once you have made your short list make arrangements to go and see them in action, at a wedding or Family celebration – you need someone who can respond to all ages—Don’t be tempted to book the DJ from the club, unless it’s purely friends of clubbing age!

Don’t scrimp on your entertainment – you spend a small fortune on your outfit, the cake, the ceremony and transport. All are important but mostly needed for a short part of the day. The DJ or entertainment will be the spine of your party and he/she will be working for about five hours, a huge chunk of the day.

Always ask them to set up before you are due to arrive at the venue. A good benchmark is to ask for everything to be set by the time of your wedding ceremony. This gives you an hour or so to ensure the set up and sound testing is complete before you and your guests arrive. This early set up also gives you the option of having background music during the meal. A good alternative is to compile a CD of your favourite tracks and ask a trusted Usher to be in charge of the music during the meal and be ready to turn it off before the Speeches!

The best tip I suggest to ensure your party goes well is to send a card to your guests with the invitations, asking each guest to chose three songs to be played at your wedding and return it to you with the reply. You simply send these to your DJ or band and ask them to include this within the “play list”.

As with all aspects of your wedding – take your time and chose wisely!

Before you pop the Question

Talk, Talk, Talk! – Talk to each other!

Discuss the idea of living together, getting engaged and extend the conversation towards Marriage and spending the rest of your lives together. This will give you a good indication of her response and you will both have a good idea of each other’s intentions. You really can’t talk too much!

If you are planning a surprise proposal, there are a few things to bear in mind:

Ascertain whether she has a preference for gold, white gold or platinum. Does she have a favorite precious stone, or is she a traditional Solitaire girl? Don’t spend a fortune unless you are sure. After all she will be wearing this ring for the rest of her life! If in any doubt buy an imitation ring for the Proposal and book a date to take her out and choose together.

It’s a very good idea to ask the permission of her Parents. It’s traditional and often assures mutual respect.

Plan your Proposal carefully, take your time – it really will be worth the effort involved. Have Fun!

What if she says no?

It’s ok to be disappointed and embarrassed. It may be that she is not ready, or that maybe you are not meant to be engaged or married.

But remember – There is someone for everyone!

Good Luck!

Another three day weekend is upon us, here in the UK! Time to have a lie in, take it easy, catch up on Jobs? Alternatively use the extra time to sort out your wedding!

Here are a few ideas for making the most of this bank holiday (particularly as it is forecast to rain!):

Look at your theme – Have you connected all aspects or are there parts that need to be embellished by your theme? Look carefully and use this time to experiment.

Start organizing your Guest list; make sure that your friends and family are included. Check with both sets of Parents to make sure everyone who needs to be invited is on the list

Use this time to play with a possible seating plan. Check with your Venue to find out the size of the tables being used. Start by deciding what sort of atmosphere you are hoping to achieve and then place people together. You can mix families, or keep the two sides separate for the meal. Some couples mix everyone up! Families and Friends all mixed up. This is a brave step, but it can work very well. Only you can decide if it will work for your Guests.

If you have not chosen your Men’s outfits, now is a good time! Many Brides accompany their Men to choose their outfit to ensure that the colours and styles will fit with the Wedding dress and other Bridal party outfits. Some trust their Men to choose the outfits and give them a free choice, apart from the colour swatch!!

Whatever you decide to do this weekend – remember to have fun and make time for each other! We will be!

One of the first questions my engaged couples ask is “what do we have to do”? Most have a fear of forgetting something really important! For that reason I have put together a checklist to give confidence and guide them through the process.

Decide type of ceremony, date and time and book it

Choose hymns and/ or music

Draw up Budget and decide with the parents who will pay for what

Choose your wedding party; Maid of honour, Best man, Bridesmaids (adults and/or children), Flower Girls, Page boys, Ring Bearer and Ushers

Draw up guest list (this is traditionally done with Bride’s mother but be sure to consult the Grooms parents too – or do it by yourselves if you want)

Choose a venue for the reception if different from the ceremony

If you are planning to have one, choose a venue decorator to help you with all the details

Organise the entertainment for the reception (string quartet, harpist, band, disco, cabaret. To name but a few options!)

Decide on wedding stationery

Decide on the menu for the reception and evening party

Decide on wedding clothes for you and for your attendants

Choose and order your wedding cake

Decide on a florist and theme for your wedding

Choose and book the photographer

Decide on and book the wedding videographer

Buy thank you gifts for parents and attendants

Book the honeymoon!

Check on vaccinations and passports for your honeymoon destination

If you do not have a valid passport—ensure you have 10 weeks clear to get one! It takes at least 6 weeks to get a first adult passport, during the summer this time is often extended.

Look for going away clothes and clothes for honeymoon

Lastly, relax and have a fabulous Wedding Day and honeymoon

This may seem like a pretty long list but there are two of you and hopefully you’ve got lots of time. If not, then don’t be afraid to ask for help, many friends and relatives would love to get involved!

If you are planning to have your wedding abroad then no doubt you have thought about how you will make the venue unique to you. Just because your special day will be overseas, it does not mean that you cannot get involved I the venue decoration. Obviously, you will need to check with your venue beforehand but in the past we have been asked to produce decorations for a number of exotic weddings.

Our first challenge for export was in March 2006, when Donna made contact and asked for help in setting up her new Wedding business in a hotel in Dominica – an up and coming Island in the Caribbean.

She was one of the first customers to use the newly opened Wedding Showroom. She was able to choose ranges of decorations to be shipped out to Dominica to transform the reception rooms and the rooftop overlooking the sea, where couples were to take their Wedding Vows. To my surprise I was also asked to advise on the decoration of the new Bridal suite- What a challenge! The goods were chosen, made to order and packed ready to be shipped to Dominica.

Early 2007 we were again asked to design a wedding for export. This was to be a beach front wedding in Tobago. The Bride chose her colours: – Lime green, turquoise and white. We handmade her bows using her three colours and sent reels of matching ribbon to wrap around the Palm trees and the little fences on the beach. We sent design ideas for her bridal flowers and also for the reception. Large white flowers framed with bright green foliage and trimmed with Turquoise and lime green ribbons, were the order of the day. The Flower girls carried small wicker baskets trimmed in co-ordinating ribbons and filled with white petals.

The tables were laid with white linen, chair covers and lime and Turquoise sashes, whilst white favour boxes tied with lime and turquoise ribbons and sparking silver heart metallic table confetti completed this vibrant design.

The goods were packed in export cartons and shipped to Trinidad eight weeks before the Wedding day. The freight was shipped on to Tobago from Trinidad and all arrived safely and in time. The Wedding was fresh and contemporary – By all accounts it was Fabulous!

Obviously this is just an example but we just wanted to let you all know that you can still get very involved in the decoration of you special day even if it is in far away lands!

The planning for your reception should be done way in advance of the wedding, it is much too important to leave to chance. If you have a wedding coordinator, they will be on hand to ensure your day runs smoothly.

Time can be a great issue with receptions; therefore we always recommend a minute by minute plan for the day. This ensures everything has its place and you know what to expect and when.

When putting together your minute by minute you need to give enough time for:

Travel time from the wedding – allowing for your guests to arrive

A receiving line (if you choose to have one)

Photographs

The meal – including toasts, speeches and cutting the wedding cake

If the reception is to finish at this time, you need time and a place to change before going away. Someone needs to be in charge of your clothes, wedding gifts and returning any hired items for you. Your guests can use this time to mingle and talk about the day whilst you are changing, before saying their goodbyes.

If the reception is continuing into the evening with dancing, cabaret or a casino, a short interval is usual to clear the tables, rearrange if necessary and be ready for the evening. Time is important but sometimes things do run late, due to the Bride arriving late, the service taking longer than anticipated or the photographer being over zealous – to name just a few possibilities! This is why time should always be added into your plan for contingencies.
