A really lovely way to give your bouquet away rather than throwing it!

I saw this and thought “how lovely”. The idea came from a lovely wedding in America, after the meal and first dance, the Bride and Groom invited all the married couples to join them for a “Special Dance”. At the end of the dance they asked everyone who had been married less than 5, then 10 years to leave the floor. This continued until the last couple other than the Bride and Groom were on the dance floor. The other couple had been married for 62 years! and to honour this the Bride presented her bouquet to the Lady – who happened to be her Great Grandmother – How lovely is that and what a super way to include others and to honour Marriage!

You’ve chosen the venue and now it’s time to book your entertainment. Booking your entertainment is a big decision and great care should be taken when making a choice. The best way of finding good entertainment is by personal recommendation, ask your friends and relatives and then use these recommendations to provide you with a short list. Once you’ve got your list, make an appointment to meet each one and discuss the type of party you are hoping for.

Ask practical questions like:

Who would be there for you should they be unable to perform? (Even Entertainers get sick, have transport breakdowns or have accidents!)

How long do they need for setting up?

Once you have made your short list make arrangements to go and see them in action, at a wedding or Family celebration – you need someone who can respond to all ages—Don’t be tempted to book the DJ from the club, unless it’s purely friends of clubbing age!

Don’t scrimp on your entertainment – you spend a small fortune on your outfit, the cake, the ceremony and transport. All are important but mostly needed for a short part of the day. The DJ or entertainment will be the spine of your party and he/she will be working for about five hours, a huge chunk of the day.

Always ask them to set up before you are due to arrive at the venue. A good benchmark is to ask for everything to be set by the time of your wedding ceremony. This gives you an hour or so to ensure the set up and sound testing is complete before you and your guests arrive. This early set up also gives you the option of having background music during the meal. A good alternative is to compile a CD of your favourite tracks and ask a trusted Usher to be in charge of the music during the meal and be ready to turn it off before the Speeches!

The best tip I suggest to ensure your party goes well is to send a card to your guests with the invitations, asking each guest to chose three songs to be played at your wedding and return it to you with the reply. You simply send these to your DJ or band and ask them to include this within the “play list”.

As with all aspects of your wedding – take your time and chose wisely!

The receiving line is a formal way of greeting your guests, and for them to be introduced to both families. It ensures that you meet with each one and share a few words. Many couples choose not to have a receiving line because of the time it takes to greet each guest individually, some think it old fashioned and prefer an informal “meet and greet”. However families are greeted together and this will save some time.

Things to remember if you do want to have a receiving line:

If you are having a Toastmaster he or she will announce the names of each guest if you wish to keep everything Formal.

If you choose to be traditional, the line up is as follows: Brides Mother, Brides Father, Grooms Mother, Grooms Father, Bride, Groom, Best Man and lastly the Chief Bridesmaid

Children are not usually included in the line up. However in second marriages it is quite nice for them to be included.

An alternative could be: – Brides Mother, Brides Father, Bride, Groom, Grooms Father, Grooms Mother, Best Man and the Bridesmaids.

When parents are divorced the new partners generally do not stand in a formal line up.

If you prefer something less formal your Guests can file past one by one or in family groups, greeting you informally, without an announcement.

What if you don’t want a formal start to the reception?

Many couples opt for a much more relaxed “meet and greet” beginning to their married life. They greet their guests together as a married couple, briefly welcoming each of them to avoid long delays and lengthy queues.

You could circulate and mingle with your guests as they arrive, have a welcome drink or you could visit each table during breaks in the meal service. This is also a good time to ask them to sign your wedding guest book if you have one. Ask the best man or an usher to take care of this for you – sadly you will be surprised how many go astray! This also actually gives a perfect opportunity for informal / natural photographs to be taken for your album.

It’s often the little things that people notice! So make sure your wedding has the finishing touches that will make the difference.

Top Tables

Your Top Table is the focus of attention during the meal and speeches; it is where you and your closest family and friends sit. Therefore a beautifully dressed Top table is a must for those all important photographs. Colour or pure white, the choice is yours, details like ribbon bows and Tulle look stunning! You can add balloon arches, floating clouds or giant metallic hearts linked with bridal Tulle for a romantic look. Candles set on a mirror base are an effective way of adding soft romantic light to your atmosphere.
Don’t forget the importance of fresh flowers to add a touch of luxury and fragrance to you wedding reception. Flowers or ribbon bows look lovely, however if you mix them the effect is stunning!

Cake Tables

The wedding Cake usually has a table of its own and is decorated to match the Top table. There are several options for table front decorations and the use of balloons and fresh flowers and greenery. Above or behind this table can be placed a simple balloon arch. Floating clouds, pre-formed hearts or metal wedding archways can be used to enhance this special area.

Photographers always take several photos of “The cake cutting ceremony” so your choices will remain with you forever!

Guest Tables

Guest tables are always important so think carefully about the look you want to achieve. Use favours, scrolls and beautifully folded napkins to give your tables the wow factor. Personalised Table numbers and Camera cards add that special something to your guest tables. colours napkins and slip cloths give a dramatic effect when deep colours are used and a Romantic effect when you use pastel shades. Plain white linen with sparkling china and glass ware looks sophisticated and elegant. This white base look needs the smallest amount of your colour to make it yours! Table confetti, cameras, streamers, party poppers, wedding bubbles and confetti cannons, can all be purchased from Rainbow Weddings.

Table Plans

Don’t forget the Table plan, bespoke table plans made to your colour and theme. A lovely addition to your Wedding Day, after the meal, ask your guests to sign it as a lasting memento!

Large decorations

Large balloon sculptures or balloon displays are an inexpensive way to add the wow factor. Large fresh floral displays are beautiful and often fragrant. Use either or a mix of both to welcome your guests at the entrance, to frame your band or disco or to add interest around your room.

The planning for your reception should be done way in advance of the wedding, it is much too important to leave to chance. If you have a wedding coordinator, they will be on hand to ensure your day runs smoothly.

Time can be a great issue with receptions; therefore we always recommend a minute by minute plan for the day. This ensures everything has its place and you know what to expect and when.

When putting together your minute by minute you need to give enough time for:

Travel time from the wedding – allowing for your guests to arrive

A receiving line (if you choose to have one)

Photographs

The meal – including toasts, speeches and cutting the wedding cake

If the reception is to finish at this time, you need time and a place to change before going away. Someone needs to be in charge of your clothes, wedding gifts and returning any hired items for you. Your guests can use this time to mingle and talk about the day whilst you are changing, before saying their goodbyes.

If the reception is continuing into the evening with dancing, cabaret or a casino, a short interval is usual to clear the tables, rearrange if necessary and be ready for the evening. Time is important but sometimes things do run late, due to the Bride arriving late, the service taking longer than anticipated or the photographer being over zealous – to name just a few possibilities! This is why time should always be added into your plan for contingencies.

I have just arrived back from the USA, after visiting suppliers and specialist bridal shops in Florida. Weddings are huge there, with some couples spending $80,000.00 on their Big Day! £40,000.00 is a lot to spend on a medium-size wedding, but services are generally more expensive than they are here in the UK.

There are some beautiful places to marry; especially outside in Florida (the weather lends itself better over there!). One venue which we have used is Cypress Gardens – it has an old colonial style house as its backdrop, with a beautiful white canopy/gazebo by the lake, which is licensed for marriages.

Another favourite is the Disney Grand Floridian and Spa, on the lagoon in Walt Disney World. There are several areas to be married on this site, but none quite as special as the White Wedding Chapel. Here you can arrive in a Cinderella style glass coach and live the fairytale for a day. Yes it is very expensive, but beautiful, if you like that sort of thing.

Las Vegas is still very popular, you can just ‘pop in’ and be married in a Wedding Chapel. I have heard that there is also a “Drive through Wedding Service”; however I didn’t manage to find it! The hotels are typically licensed too – some couples get married on the steps of a bridge in St Mark’s Square, in the middle of the Venetian Hotel! Not my idea of romance – but it was very popular, I saw three couples there in one day!

Perhaps the most popular destinations for weddings abroad though are the Caribbean islands. Here and other beach type resorts are still the number one choice for my clients, and it’s easy to see why. They boast beautiful romantic destinations, entwined in a wonderful honeymoon and generally they are reasonably priced – what more could you ask for?
